                  Short history

The Theatre Union from Moldova was established in 1946. In anticipation of that year there were some temptations to organize such a society.

In 1946, the Theatre Society of all Russia announced that in the capital of the USSR (The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) will take place a theatre congress, in which should take part all the republics.

It should be convoked a meeting, elected a Director and founded a Theater Society. A gathering took place, which assisted theatre from the Chişinău, Bălţi, The Philharmonic Hall, Radio and so one. It was elected a President of the Theatre Union from Moldova and drew up the status of the organization.

After that, in the course of ten years it was organized five other departments at the Theatre Society. The first Department was working with the spectators, the second – with the actors, the third meant the stage work. Also there were the Theatrology and Scenography Department. Each Department has a President in front of it, that worked after a definite plan.

Victor Gherlac was the President of the Society twelve years. At the second Society Congress was elected Mefodie Apostolov as the President of the Society. He managed the Theatre Society thirty years, from 1958 to 1988.

The Theatre Union (that time named the Theatre Association from Moldova), leaded by M. Apostolov, activated prodigiously. There were diverse artistic events organized at the Society, such as theatre festivals, symposiums, and meetings with remarkable theatre celebrities, mono spectacles, and different competitions.

Veniamin Apostol obtained two presidential mandates at the Theatre Union beginning with1988.

Petru Baracci directed the Union from 1997 to 2005.

In 2005 was voted into the chair of the president Aurelian Dănilă, who hold the position till 2005.

From 11 May 2009, the President of the Theatre Union from Moldova is Alexandru Grecu.
